The heart of the NYU campus is located Greenwich Village nestled around Washington Square Park.
Arriving by Plane
There are three major airports that are reasonably convenient to the main Greenwich Village location around Washington Square Park. Depending on where you you will be staying, flight costs, and available options from your origin you can safely choose any of these.
Recommended Airports:
Tips for getting into the City:
Taxis: There are established flat rate taxi fares when traveling from an airport into Manhattan. Always look for an established taxi line outside of baggage claim or use a known car service. If you are asked if you need a taxi or offered a ride, do not accept. This option can get you directly to your destination but may be the most costly option.
Public Transportation: NY and NJ public transportation is reliable and often convenient to connect you to the final destination. This option may require some transfers between trains and/or subway lines, can be tricky when carrying larger luggage, and take more time; however, this will be the most affordable option.
Airport Shuttles: All three airports have private shuttle bus services that you can pay a modest price for a ticket to be dropped off at two central locations within Manhattan. Depending on where your lodging is, you can easily walk, catch a taxi, bus, or subway to your final destination.
Arriving by Train
Metro North into Grand Central Station
From Grand Central, it is most convenient to take the Lexington Avenue subway (6 train) downtown. Depending on your final destination you will likely want to exit at the Astor Place Station in order to make a 10 minute walk to the Washington Square Park area.
Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), Amtrak, or New Jersey Transit into Moynihan Train Hall at Pennsylvania Station (Moynihan/Penn Station)
From Moynihan/Penn Station, it is usually most convenient to take the 8th Avenue subway (A, C, or E train) downtown to West Fourth Street-Washington Square Station. Walk east until you reach Washington Square Park.
PATH Trains from New Jersey
The Ninth Street Station (Sixth Avenue and Ninth Street) is the most central to Washington Square Park. Once you leave the station, walk south on 6th Avenue to West Fourth Street and then east to the park. Check the list of stations closest to your final destination, there may be another stop closer for you.
Arriving by Subway
These subway lines and stations run closest to our main hub of locations in Manhattan and are good options to select from:
Arriving by Bus
If you are traveling into Manhattan on a bus, all Greyhound, New Jersey Transit, and other commuter buses go to the Port Authority Terminal located at 42nd Street and 8th Avenue. From there, take the Eighth Avenue subway (blue line) downtown.
Within NYC, the most convenient MTA bus lines are the M1, M2, M3, M5, M6, M8, M10, and the M21.
Additional Public Transportation Resources
Parking
New York City is actively reducing car traffic, particularly in heavily congested areas of Manhattan and Brooklyn, in order to support a healthier city. We recommend using public transportation unless the conveience of driving is an important consideration.
Parking in New York City can be a challenge. Most of the prime spots on the street get filled-up quickly and you need to know about special New York City parking rules like “alternate side of the street parking days.”
Fortunately, there are thousands of parking facilities to choose from. While locations are licensed by the City’s Department of Consumer Affairs, prices are not regulated. When choosing to park, please note that there is a difference in pricing for hourly, all-day, and overnight parking. Some locations may offer an NYU discount with an ID, oversized vehicles often cost extra, and not all locations are open 24-hours.
